A practical guide to auditing your data stack

Claire Fontaine

Most teams do not know how many tools they actively use until someone checks the credit card statement. Before connecting data to an intelligence layer, spend half a day identifying what you have, where key metrics live, and which sources are authoritative.

Building your inventory

List every tool touching customer, revenue, or operational data. Note what it holds, who owns it, how often it updates, and whether another tool overlaps. Pay particular attention to metric definitions.

What to look for

Look for redundancy and gaps. Redundancy is two tools holding the same data with no trust rule. Gaps are recurring questions no single tool can answer. Both determine which sources to connect first.
